Picture an overnight bus gliding out of Hyderabad at dusk, forty-two passengers settling into sleeper berths, luggage stowed, and not a drop of diesel on board. That is the journey Blackbuck Electric Vehicles has been building towards — and with the unveiling of the ELON 3X, its 15-metre, three-axle electric sleeper coach, the Hyderabad company has given India a glimpse of what long-distance electric travel can look like.

The ELON 3X is designed from the ground up for the overnight intercity run — the route where comfort matters as much as range, and where a coach has to carry people, luggage and expectations across hundreds of kilometres. The company describes it as India’s first 15-metre multi-axle electric sleeper coach, and the numbers behind that claim are striking: 42 sleeper berths, dedicated accommodation for a driver and co-driver, and more than 9 cubic metres of luggage space.
A coach built around the sleeper, not adapted from a diesel bus
At the heart of the ELON 3X is Blackbuck EV’s Born-Electric Skateboard Architecture — a platform designed specifically for electric mobility, rather than adapted from a conventional diesel-powered bus. The architecture integrates the vehicle’s structure, electric propulsion, energy storage and electrical systems into a single unified platform, and lightweight design has been a central engineering priority throughout. The result, the company says, is a coach that carries a full sleeper load while keeping energy use in check — the engineering balance on which an electric intercity business stands or falls.
Two battery configurations are on offer — 425 kWh and 565 kWh — so operators can match the coach to different long-distance operating requirements. The buses use the company’s proprietary skateboard chassis architecture with an aluminium-composite spaceframe, a combination chosen for strength, lightness and the kind of structural integrity a 15-metre coach demands on Indian highways.
Four years of engineering, two years on real roads
The ELON 3X represents four years of dedicated engineering and product development, including two years of continuous real-world road testing. That testing has shaped the vehicle’s handling, stability, ride comfort, system integration and durability — the qualities passengers feel on a night journey, even if they never see the engineering behind them.
The ride itself is engineered for the long haul. The coach features independent suspension with active tag-axle steering, combined with Electronically Controlled Air Suspension (ECAS) — a combination designed to smooth out highway miles and keep a 15-metre coach nimble at low speeds, in depots and at terminals. Safety systems come as standard: Electronic Braking System (EBS), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and disc brakes on all wheels. The company says the vehicle has been developed with reference to European automotive standards and international design practices, reflecting an ambition to take Indian engineering well beyond Indian roads.

From a 2022 start-up to a three-model electric bus family
Blackbuck Electric Vehicles was established in 2022 in Hyderabad, founded by R K Raju with a belief that electric mobility gives engineers the freedom to rethink the bus from the ground up. “Our vision is to make every journey more comfortable for passengers, every vehicle more valuable to its operator, and every unit of energy go further,” Raju says. “We are building that future through original engineering — with the ambition to take Indian innovation to the world.”
The ELON 3X is the flagship of a growing family. Alongside it sit the ELON 2X, a 13.5-metre premium intercity coach, and the VIRO 2X, a 9-metre model for urban operations unveiled in April 2026. The range is already finding partners: in August 2026, Blackbuck EV signed a memorandum of understanding with Chalo Mobility for the proposed deployment of up to 300 premium electric buses across urban and intercity routes, spanning the 9-, 13.5- and 15-metre configurations, with Blackbuck EV manufacturing, supplying and maintaining the vehicles.
Reservations for the ELON 3X are now open, and the company is engaging with intercity transport operators ahead of commercial production, targeted for mid-2027. For passengers, that means the overnight sleeper — one of India’s most loved ways to travel — is quietly being re-engineered for an electric future, by a Hyderabad team that started with a blank sheet and a very large coach.
