Every Indian engine carries a secret it never shows off: a set of small, curved steel shells that let the crankshaft spin thousands of times a minute without metal ever touching metal. In Kolhapur, Maharashtra, one company has spent more than three decades perfecting exactly that part — and its bearings now keep engines running across automotive, agricultural, industrial and heavy-engineering applications.

Menon Bearings Limited was incorporated in 1991 and built its plant at Gokul Shirgaon MIDC, Kolhapur. From that single integrated facility, the company says, it makes a full range of critical engine components under one roof: bi-metallic engine bearings, engine bushings, PTFE bushings, thrust washers and flange bearings.

The work is precision at microscopic scale. A bearing shell must hold its shape under heat, load and constant motion, with clearances measured in microns, because the moment it fails, the engine stops. Menon Bearings describes itself as India’s leading engine bearings company, and its fully integrated manufacturing — from raw material to finished, tested component — is built around that unforgiving standard.

Beyond the bearing itself, the Menon group has grown two more specialities alongside it. Menon Alkop makes fully machined aluminium alloy components through high-pressure and gravity die casting for automotive and industrial customers, while Menon Brakes produces asbestos-free brake linings, brake pads and riveted brake shoes for light and heavy commercial vehicles.

The numbers tell the story of a steady, compounding business. The company says its revenue from operations reached Rs 243.78 crore in FY25, with a net profit of Rs 24.93 crore, and its shares trade on the BSE and the NSE — a listed, Kolhapur-grown manufacturer holding its own among India’s auto-component majors.

What stands out most about Menon Bearings is how quietly it does all this. There is no flashy marketing machine here — just a plant in Kolhapur, three decades of metallurgy, and parts so reliable that the engines around them get all the attention. The next time a truck climbs a ghat road or a tractor works a long day in the field, there is a good chance a little bit of Kolhapur is inside, spinning silently at the heart of it all.
