On 4 November 2026, the first locally built Mercedes-Benz Electric GLC rolled out of the company’s plant at Chakan, near Pune — and with it, Pune joined Bremen, Germany, as one of only two production locations in the world for the all-electric GLC. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis attended the rollout ceremony alongside senior Mercedes-Benz Group executives, marking a new chapter for luxury electric manufacturing in India.

A new electric architecture, built in India

The Electric GLC is the first locally manufactured Mercedes-Benz model based on the company’s new-generation MB.EA-M electric vehicle architecture — and the first Mercedes-Benz SUV in India built on that platform. For India, the SUV comes in a single, fully loaded trim: the GLC 400 4MATIC, priced at ₹78.50 lakh (ex-showroom, pan-India), with customer deliveries beginning in mid-November 2026.

The company says the Electric GLC is also the fastest global model it has brought to India as a locally assembled vehicle, arriving just six months after sales began in Europe. Early interest has been strong: the company says more than 650 expressions of interest arrived within 36 hours of registrations opening on 5 October 2026.

711 kilometres, 800 volts, 10-minute top-ups

The numbers tell the engineering story. The GLC 400 4MATIC pairs two electric motors in an all-wheel-drive layout, producing 360 kW (489 hp) and 800 Nm of torque, for a 0–100 kmph sprint in 4.3 seconds. Its 94 kWh battery delivers a claimed range of up to 711 km on the WLTP cycle, as certified by ARAI.

An 800-volt electrical architecture supports DC fast charging at up to 330 kW, which the company says can add up to 303 km of range in just 10 minutes under ideal conditions. Long-distance electric driving, in other words, stops being a planning exercise and starts feeling like any other journey.

A software-defined cabin

Inside, the Electric GLC is the first Mercedes-Benz SUV in India to feature the company’s new Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a software-defined vehicle architecture that supports intelligent navigation, advanced driver assistance systems, over-the-air updates and personalised user experiences.

The cabin’s centrepiece is a 39.1-inch MBUX Hyperscreen stretching across the dashboard, complemented by an illuminated grille featuring 942 light pixels and the brand’s SKY CONTROL panoramic roof. The company says sustainable and recycled materials have also been used extensively throughout the vehicle.

Chakan: one line, every powertrain

The most quietly impressive part of the story is how the car is made. The Electric GLC is produced on the same flexible assembly line as Mercedes-Benz’s internal combustion engine models — a feat of manufacturing flexibility that lets one Pune line build very different machines side by side. The company says the plant uses AI-enabled production systems, robotics and digital manufacturing processes across its operations, with more than 15 live AI projects aimed at improving manufacturing quality, efficiency and decision-making.

Mercedes-Benz says it invested an additional ₹200 crore in India in 2026 towards manufacturing operations, new product launches and digitisation, taking its cumulative investment in the country to ₹3,200 crore — which the company says is the highest among luxury carmakers operating in India. The company has sold more than 240,000 vehicles in India since it began operations here, most of them produced locally at Chakan.

Pune has long been one of India’s great automotive cities. With the Electric GLC, it now builds one of the world’s newest electric luxury platforms, on the same line as the cars that came before it — and sends a clear signal about where India’s automotive future is being made.
