Every litre of water Chennai drinks has to come from somewhere — a reservoir, a tanker, a borewell digging deeper each year. In a city that has watched its lakes run dry, a startup called Aeronero is asking a different question: what if the water is already all around us, floating in the air?

Aeronero Solutions Pvt. Ltd., founded in Chennai in 2019 by Dr Durga Das, builds atmospheric water generators — machines that pull moisture out of the air and turn it into clean, alkaline drinking water. The company says its systems keep working where ordinary machines give up: in low humidity, in the heat, and off the grid. From a 20-litre home unit to industrial systems producing tens of thousands of litres a day, the idea is the same — a tap that needs no pipeline, no tanker and no groundwater at all.

Two ways to catch water from air

Most atmospheric water generators rely on a single trick: cooling air until its moisture condenses. Aeronero’s patented ConDessa™ technology pairs condensation with a second method — desiccation, which draws moisture out of the air with a drying material — and the company says the hybrid is what lets its machines keep producing in conditions where condensation alone stalls. The company calls ConDessa the world’s only hybrid system combining both methods, and says its machines operate across 35% to 95% humidity, so the same unit works in coastal Chennai and in dry inland towns.

The engineering is backed by more than 13 patents and a research partnership with IIT Madras. A 2025 scientific analysis of the Bubble system, published with the company, reported 30–45% higher water yield per unit of energy than conventional condensation-only systems, with output water meeting or surpassing WHO standards. The company manufactures all its products in-house in Chennai.

A machine for every scale

The range starts at home. Bubble makes up to 20 litres a day for a household, Drizzle makes 40 litres with a rugged, weather-ready design, Thunder generates 150 litres a day for larger needs, and Airwell produces 500 litres a day at commercial scale. Modular industrial systems scale from 5,000 to 50,000 litres a day, the company says.

Every unit runs the same six-step process: air filtration, cooling and condensation, pre- and post-carbon filters, ultra-UV purification, then mineralisation that leaves the water alkaline at pH 7.0–8.5. IoT dashboards track production and filter health, and the machines are solar-compatible — the company says water made on solar power costs nothing per litre, against about Rs 4 a litre on grid power.

From homes to whole townships

The machines are already working at scale. The company counts 710 deployments worldwide, 8.54 million lives touched and 24.6 million litres of water generated, with 123 million litres of groundwater preserved. Its flagship partnership is with Prestige Group, which is deploying Aeronero systems across 35,000 homes in 30 upcoming projects, and the company says it has secured contracts for a million homes in Mexico City. In November 2025, Aeronero launched AQUAIR with OI Brewing Co. — bottled water made entirely from air, produced in Pune at 10,000 litres a day.

The backing behind the bet

In August 2025, Aeronero raised $1.5 million led by Callapina Capital and Rezwan Razack of Prestige Group, with SAN ANGELS and Jamwant Ventures among the co-investors, and the company reported a Rs 30 crore order book at the time. The founder told YourStory revenues grew from Rs 4 crore to Rs 40 crore in FY25. The work has drawn international recognition too: Frost & Sullivan’s 2025 Global Transformational Innovation Leadership Award in atmospheric water generation, and a cover feature on Outlook Business in January 2026.

In November 2025, Aeronero signed a term sheet with Bengaluru Airport City Limited to build an Innovation Hub and Corporate Showcase at Kempegowda International Airport — a live demonstration and research centre for its full range, from Bubble to AQUAIR. Aeronero was also named to YourStory’s Tech30 cohort of India’s most promising startups.

The air over India holds an ocean’s worth of water. Aeronero’s bet is that the cheapest, cleanest source of drinking water is the one above our heads — and that a machine in the corner of a home, a school or a whole township can turn it into a tap that never runs dry.
