Inside almost every plant that keeps India running — a steel mill rolling red-hot metal, a cement kiln turning day and night, a sugar factory crushing cane at full pace — there is a gearbox quietly doing the hardest work. In a great many of those plants, that gearbox was designed and built in Coimbatore by Shanthi Gears Limited, a company that has spent more than five decades perfecting the art of industrial gearing.

Shanthi Gears is an industrial gearing solutions company. The company says it designs and manufactures gears, gearboxes, geared motors and gear assemblies at its integrated manufacturing facilities in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu — and it has been doing so with a single-minded focus that few Indian engineering firms can match.

From a Coimbatore workshop to a Murugappa Group company

The story begins in 1969, when Shanthi Gears was promoted as a partnership concern. It became a private limited company in July 1972 and a public limited company in 1986, growing steadily on the strength of its engineering. In 2013 it joined the Murugappa Group, one of India’s most respected business houses — a step the company says opened up new frontiers in technology, capabilities, product segments and markets.

Today Shanthi Gears operates from its registered office at 304-A, Trichy Road, Singanallur, Coimbatore, with manufacturing units across the city. Its products travel far beyond Tamil Nadu: the company says it serves customers predominantly across India and exports to countries in Asia, Europe and the Americas.

What it actually makes

The company’s range covers the full world of industrial gearing. Its standard and custom-built gearboxes include worm gearboxes, helical and bevel helical gearboxes, geared motors, planetary gearboxes, mill gearboxes and open gearing, alongside products for textile industries and CNC machine tools. Where a standard unit will not do, Shanthi Gears engineers a custom-built gearbox for the exact duty — a capability that has made it a go-to partner for plants with unusual loads, speeds and spaces.

That engineering shows up in some of India’s toughest working environments. The company’s gearboxes drive steel mills and rolling mills, cement plants, sugar factories, cranes and material handling systems, power plants, paper mills, rubber and plastics lines, off-highway and mining equipment, process plants, compressors, railways, textile machinery and aerospace applications. When a gearbox must run for years without stopping, that is the kind of trust Shanthi Gears is built on.

Engineering, foundry and service under one roof

What sets the company apart is how much of the job it does itself. Alongside gear and gearbox manufacturing, Shanthi Gears runs foundry operations and offers refurbishing and repair of old gearboxes — breathing new life into equipment that other makers might write off. Its service arm covers installation support, on-site service and gearbox repair, so a customer is supported long after the gearbox leaves Coimbatore.

Quality runs through the operation. The company holds AS9100D certification for aerospace-quality management, along with IMS and IRIS certifications, and its in-house research and development team works continuously on alternate materials and processes that add value and cut cost. Capital investments, the company says, are made wherever technological upgradation is required — a discipline that keeps a five-decade-old manufacturer thoroughly modern.

Scale that shows up in the numbers

In FY25, Shanthi Gears reported revenue from operations of Rs 604.62 crore, up 13% over the previous year on the back of higher order inflows and deliveries, with EBITDA of Rs 143.39 crore and a net profit of Rs 96.03 crore. The company says it remains debt free, and its return on capital employed improved to 35% in FY25 — a mark of an engineering business run with rare financial discipline.

The replacement segment in power transmission has been a particular strength, the company says, with deep customer engagement sustaining its competitive advantage. It is a quiet kind of leadership: no noise, just gearboxes that keep turning, year after year, in the plants that build India.

For a company that began as a small Coimbatore partnership and grew into a Murugappa Group engineering house supplying thirteen industries across the world, Shanthi Gears is a shining example of Indian manufacturing at its finest — precise, dependable and built to last.
