Picture an Indian city a few years from now: the bus pulling up to your stop hums instead of rumbles, the delivery van dropping off your order runs on batteries instead of diesel, and the heavy truck hauling freight out of the city does it all without a drop of fuel. A Pune company has just opened the factories to build that future at scale.
EKA Mobility, the electric commercial vehicle maker from the Pinnacle Industries group, has inaugurated six manufacturing facilities across Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh at an event in Pune called EKA Avirbhava, as part of a manufacturing investment of more than ₹3,500 crore. Together with its group companies, the company says it now operates 11 manufacturing facilities spread across 120 acres, with a combined capacity of more than 40,000 electric vehicles a year.

Six plants, one integrated ecosystem
The six new facilities cover the whole journey from engineering to finished vehicle. In Pune, the EKA Small Commercial Vehicle Plant will build the company’s electric small commercial vehicles, while the EKA Bus and Trucks Plant will cater to its electric buses and medium and heavy commercial vehicle truck platforms. Alongside them, the VDL Pinnacle Engineering Plant, a joint venture between Netherlands-based VDL Groep and Pinnacle Industries, will focus on automotive engineering.
The remaining three plants complete the ecosystem. The Instor India Plant will manufacture retail store fixtures, displays and storage solutions alongside automotive components, including electric bus body structures and IP67-rated battery enclosures. The Pinnacle Seating and Interiors Plant in Pune will manufacture seating, interiors and components for the western region, while the Pinnacle Interiors Plant in Pithampur, Madhya Pradesh, the group’s largest facility, will manufacture seating systems and interiors for buses, trains, tractors, ambulances, motorhomes and custom vehicles.
That breadth is the point. EKA Mobility builds electric buses, small commercial vehicles and medium and heavy trucks, and the company says its portfolio is designed to touch both passenger and goods transport. “The diversity of our product portfolio is not an accident. It is a conscious idea, because to make a real difference, we must impact every Indian and every traveller,” says Dr Sudhir Mehta, Founder and Chairman of EKA Mobility and group companies. “EKA Avirbhava marks a defining milestone in our journey of building a future-ready, globally competitive manufacturing ecosystem rooted in India.”
Built on Indian engineering
Behind the new plants sits a deep Indian engineering base. The group says it has invested more than ₹600 crore in research and development, holds more than 300 intellectual properties, and employs more than 6,000 people, including a 1,000-member R&D team of designers and engineers. Its proprietary software platform, EKA Connect, is developed in India and monitors more than 1,500 parameters of every running vehicle every half a second, with the company saying vehicle and operational data remain within India.
EKA Mobility is a Champion OEM under the Government of India’s Automotive Production-Linked Incentive Scheme and says it has received PLI certification across all its product platforms. The company says it has more than 3,000 vehicles on the road, a network of more than 75 dealerships across India, and an order book of more than 11,000 buses valued at US$1.7 billion, with deployments across states including Maharashtra, Delhi, Rajasthan, Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh.
The momentum is already visible in the numbers. In the first half of FY27, the company says it delivered 1,786 vehicles, compared with 133 in the same period last year, a growth of 1,243 percent. Small commercial vehicles accounted for 1,286 of those, up from 79 a year earlier, while electric buses contributed 500, up from 54. Its electric small commercial vehicles have recorded more than 1,500 sales across passenger mobility, last-mile delivery and goods transportation.
From Pune to the world
The new capacity is not only for India. EKA Mobility says its electric buses are already deployed in Zanzibar and its small commercial vehicles are operating in Nepal, and the company is setting up assembly plants in South Africa and Australia as part of its international expansion. The group expects its 11 facilities to generate more than 2.5 lakh jobs over the next five years across its operations and the wider ecosystem.
That is the scale of the bet EKA Mobility has just placed: not a single new model, but a whole manufacturing ecosystem, designed and engineered in India, ready to put tens of thousands of electric buses, trucks and small commercial vehicles on the road every year. The next time a silent electric bus glides past you in an Indian city, there is a good chance it was built in Pune, in one of the plants inaugurated this week.
